This beautiful antique Japanese geisha lacquer makeup chest includes two drawers, two makeup pallets, and a collapsible mirror. The outside is decorated with carvings of flowers and birds, and there are two small handles on the sides. We believe it dates from the early 1900s, c. 1901-1910. The geisha makeup traditions began before the invention of electricity, when entertainers began painting their faces to look better when they performed by candlelight, and the traditional makeup became an important symbol of their profession.
Size: About 9.5 x 9.5 inches square and 10 inches tall.
Condition: Good used condition. The bottom drawer pushes in a little too far, but we think that could be fixed.
Our Price: $225. (No tax because we’re a nonprofit.)
