Gothic Style Furniture

Gothic is an aesthetic as well as a style with roots that go back centuries and ties to fashion, art, and literature. Gothic revival was a style of architecture and furniture that began in the 18th century and became popular during the 19th century. It took its inspiration from Medieval architecture, attempting to capture the romance of a bygone era as the world was becoming increasingly industrialized. Gothic literature, which evolved around the same time, was also has Medieval settings, especially in the early novels, and focused on mysterious and supernatural events.  Over time, aspects of the architectural and decor styles combined with aspects of gothic literature to produce the modern gothic aesthetic.

Modern gothic decor and furniture combines aspects of vintage and Victorian styles with modern minimalism. Gothic style furniture can still have some ornate design features, but modern gothic style furniture tends to have simpler lines than traditional gothic revival furniture. In keeping with its traditional romanticism and the mysterious mood of gothic literature, it uses dark colors, especially dark wood and black, dark blue, dark green, or dark red fabrics.  Gothic artwork and decor often references features of gothic literature with an emphasis on somber themes or creating a mysterious atmosphere, and it can include some fascinating old-fashioned curiosities.  If you would like to add a little mystery to your room, consider trying gothic style furniture and decor!
